Prepare for CAT Without Coaching & CAT Preparation Strategy

CAT (Common Admission Test) is prerequisite requirement to crack for the admission to IIM for MBA. There are 20 IIM and this year the CAT exam will be conducted on 24, November, 2019 by IIM Kozhikode. CAT score is also acceptable to other prestigious MBA institutes. It is a national level exam and considered as toughest exam for post graduation in Business Management courses.

Candidates have to first decide whether they will join some coaching institute or they will prepare without coaching. In case of joining coaching, institute will provide you complete guidance and preparation. This will include time schedule, coaching classes and periodic tests. Of course, there is a financial aspect of joining coaching as fees are considerable.

  1. Time table for preparation:-

Prepare your time table for preparation at least six month before final exam. This should be day wise weekly time table with assigning the subject and topics. The preparation should be taken on priority as it is very tough exam. A scheduled preparation will ensure you utilization of time and covering all subjects and topics within a given period.

2.Know the syllabus and exam pattern in details:-

There are mainly three sections/ subjects i) Verbal reasoning and Reading Comprehension which covers English language, ii) Quantitative Aptitude (covers numerical Ability) and iii) Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning. Remember scoring high in all sections is must, however different IIM may have different weightage for different sections. Every section is independently for 60 minutes in exams. Total paper time is of 3 hours.

3. Study Material

The coaching institutes provide tailor made course material to their students. For self-preparation, the availability of best study material is must, for example, book written by Arun Sharma on ‘How to Prepare for Quantitative Aptitude for the CAT’ can be purchased. However study material are available on line or off line.

4.Utilize Net:

You can connect yourself to ocean of information thru net. Previous years question papers, cut off marks etc. should be analysed. Online courses, CAT mock papers, syllabus, current exam related information can always be accessed. Google, twitter account, Facebook can also keep you in touch with latest and specific information.

5.Take Free CAT Online Mock Tests:

The exam pattern of MCQ type is with four options to choose from. There will be total 100 questions of maximum total 300 marks, three marks of each correct answer. There is one mark deduction for wrong attempted answer. There may be some questions without negative marking.

Either you are going for coaching or doing self-studies, practice on mock papers is must. After study of the subjects thoroughly, attempt mock tests. Only attempting mock test will also not help much. Analysing your performance after each attempt in terms of section wise time taken, scoring, wrong answered questions will help you improving up on yourself for next mock test.
